According to a recent FTC study, as many as 10 million Americans a year are the victim of some form of identity theft, with New York in the top 10 identity theft sites per capita in 2010. M&T Bank is helping keep sensitive data safe, while aiding in Spring cleanup, with two community shredding and electronic recycling events on May 12 and 19.

Customers can bring in unneeded documents for free, on-the-spot shredding, provided by Cintas Document Shredding Solutions. Old computers, televisions or any other electronic equipment will be recycled by Sunning Electronics Recycling in partnership with the YMCA of Greater Rochester.

Refreshments will be provided by Le Petit Poutine during both events from 11 a.m. - 2p.m, and there will be music and giveaways.

Each year eBay holds an “Innovation Expo” where eBay employees are invited to submit their ideas to develop prototypes that will enhance the buyer/seller experience. In 2010 the winner was a concept called “Simple Green Shipping”. The idea was to produce a box for shipping eBay items that could be used over and over again by the eBay community. Read more

Sunnking hosted its latest electronics recycling event in East Aurora, NY on Saturday, January 15 from 10am-2pm in the parking lot of Nativity Lutheran Church. The event was hosted in conjunction with the East Aurora Rotary Club, and over twenty volunteers from the club showed up to help collect electronic scrap from local residents and businesses. Tito Ingenieri, a man from Quilmes, Argentina has spent the last 16 years building a house from over 6 million bottles that he’s collected. I’m not too sure a building inspector would approve, and I probably wouldn’t recommend doing this without the help of a structural engineer, but since it’s green I like it! Read more

Catherine Charlot, owner of the fashion company Himane based in Brooklyn, NY takes broken umbrellas and turns trash into fashion. After rainy weather strikes in NYC, Catherine takes to the streets looking for broken umbrellas that have been thrown to the curb, and takes them back to her studio to create dresses, handbags, dog clothing, and even jewelry. Last week, Mike Callan got a call from his father-in-law. “He had an old computer,” Callan said. “He wasn’t sure what to do with it, but didn’t want to just throw it away.” It’s a problem–old electronics that collect dust. They can’t be simply thrown away–New York is one of 24 states that has banned them in landfills. Read more

Governor Paterson recently signed a new law requiring manufacturers to take back and recycle rechargeable batteries. The program (applicable to NYS businesses) is manufacturer-funded, and is a great compliment to the existing Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act. Producers of electronics and products containing rechargeable batteries will be required to establish recycling collection programs at no cost to consumers or taxpayers. Read more

Japan gets an average of 20-30 feet of extra snow each year, so the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry decided to collect snow last year at the New Chitose Airport. The snow was stored and covered with heat-insulating materials, so that it could then be used in the summer months to chill the liquid used in the airport’s cooling system. Read more
