Greenpeace “Green Electronics Survey” – Recycling Is Biggest Issue

This month Greenpeace released it’s 3rd “Green Electronics Survey”, which assessed the greenest products that will be available in 2011. A total of 18 of the leading electronics manufacturers submitted their products for review, and were ranked based on three criteria:

  1. Toxic Substances
  2. Product Lifecycle
  3. Energy Efficiency

There were three main findings from the survey:

  1. There have been significant reductions in the use of hazardous chemicals such as PVC, brominated flame retardants, phthalates, beryllium, antimony, and associated compounds in the production of products.
  2. Almost all products exceeded the current Energy Star energy efficiency standards (although there was less effort put into reducing the energy spent during the production process.
  3. Product lifecycle responsibility must improve. Recycling, take-back programs, reuse, and longer product life/use are the areas that need the most improvement.
