Pick Up The Parks Results!

On April 9th, the Monroe County Parks Department banded together with volunteer groups to take care of some spring cleaning for their annual Pick Up The Parks program. Pick Up The Parks occurs every spring of each year, and this year was the first time that Sunnking participated by providing free electronics recycling to volunteers, as well as a complete waste audit from the trash collected.
In the past, only 4 parks have been tended to with this program, and this year it increased to 6! The parks that were picked up included Black Creek, Ellison, Genesee Valley, Mendon Ponds, Ontario Beach, and Seneca Parks. There were a handful of companies that were instrumental in the planning and execution of Pick Up The Parks; this includes Cornell Cooperative Extension, The Friends & Neighbors of Seneca Park, Geo-Roc, Genesee Regional Off-Road Cycling, Genesee Valley Chapter Adirondack Mountain Club, Monroe County Department of Environmental Services, The Sierra Club Rochester Regional Group, and the Water Education Collaborative.
Take a look at the chart below that lists all of the individual weights of the waste that was collected!
All together in picking up all 6 of the Monroe County Parks, a whopping 1,725 pounds of trash was collected! Aside from the trash, over 200 pounds of #1-#7 plastics (all of which can be recycled now thanks to the new recycling law in Monroe County), 102 pounds of metal beverage cans, 304 pounds of glass, and 182 pounds of paper were collected that were all able to be recycled!
Normally Pick Up The Parks just focuses on picking up trash to dispose and items to recycle. But this year with Sunnking on board, free electronics recycling was set up at each park site to keep up with the green theme of Picking Up The Parks. Since e-scrap is a prominent and growing part of our waste stream, it was only appropriate to incorporate some electronics recycling into the mix. The amount of e-waste collected at Pick Up The Parks ended up being 2,861 pounds!
Thanks to everyone who helped out and participated in Pick Up The Parks, and we look forward to seeing even bigger numbers next spring!
