More Than 15 Tons of Old Electronics Collected at Third Annual “ecyclebflo” Event on June 28 - Nearly Twice as Much eWaste Collected as 2010 Event

BUFFALO, NEW YORK (July 13, 2011) – Nearly 31,000 pounds of recycled electronic materials were collected at the June 28 “ecyclebflo” event in downtown Buffalo according to the lead event sponsors Shatter I.T., Western New York’s only commercial data center that is fully staffed and accessible 24/7, and Sunnking Recycling, experts in electronics recycling and secure destruction. Other event sponsors were Channel 7, Rich’s, Business First, Get Noticed Promotions, and Ozone Design.

Nearly twice as much eWaste was collected at this year’s event, as the annual collection continues to build its awareness and participation. Once again, a donation from the proceeds was made to the Ed-Tech Foundation of WNY, a grass roots effort aimed at increasing the access and equity of technology in education, especially to under-served populations.

“We set a goal this year of collecting more than 30,000 pounds of material,” said Peter C. Ronca, Shatter’s President and Chief Executive Officer, “and we surpassed it. Statistics show that only one of every seven discarded electronic products is properly recycled, so this event was a big plus for the environment. And we made a sizable donation to Ed-Tech, so it was also a big plus for many young people in Western New York. We were proud to help lead an effort that did something good for the environment and for our children.”

“This is an event that we look forward to every year. We have developed some tremendous relationships with our co-sponsors and with Ed-Tech Foundation of WNY. In addition to benefiting an outstanding charity, we ensure that all material collected is properly recycled, while also providing data security so any material that contains a hard drive is either wiped or shredded so no one has to be concerned about their personal information,” said Adam Shine, Sales Manager at Sunnking.

Items collected at the event included old computers (desktops and laptops), printers, copiers, keyboards, mice, phones, pagers, monitors & CRTs, and TVs – most of which would have ended up in municipal landfills.

“We have already begun planning next year’s event,” added Mr. Ronca, “with a goal of building on our momentum and collecting in excess of 50,000 pounds of waste. If any organization or individual would like to participate next year as a sponsor or volunteer, you can call or e-mail us.”
