There's More Gold in a Ton of E-Waste Than in a Ton of Gold Ore

Here's a comparison that sounds backwards until you look at the numbers: pound for pound, your old circuit boards can contain more gold than the rock a mining company digs out of the ground to get gold in the first place.

The Actual Numbers

Traditional gold ore typically runs about 1 to 5 grams of gold per metric ton of rock. That's the baseline miners work with; it's why gold mining requires processing enormous volumes of material for a relatively small yield.

Now compare that to circuit boards. A metals recovery breakthrough reported in 2025 tested high-grade printed circuit board waste and recovered gold at a concentration of 551 grams per metric ton—over 100 times richer than conventional ore. Silver told a similar story, coming in at 2,804 grams per ton, far above typical mined ore concentrations.

That's not a one-off lab fluke, either. Industry reporting on e-waste recycling has found that a single ton of printed circuit boards contains at least 200 kilograms of copper, roughly 90 grams of gold, and 400 grams of silver, with precious metal concentrations running about 10 times higher than what's found in natural ore deposits.

So depending on how concentrated the feedstock is, e-waste can carry anywhere from 10 to over 100 times more gold per ton than the ore we mine to get gold in the first place.

Why This Isn't Common Knowledge

If circuit boards are richer in gold than ore, why isn't everyone mining their junk drawer?

Because e-waste is complicated. A single smartphone can contain dozens of different metals, many in tiny amounts, mixed with plastics, hazardous materials, and components that vary by model and manufacturing year. Extracting the metal cleanly requires real infrastructure—which is exactly why so little of it happens.

Globally, the world generated 62 million metric tons of e-waste in a recent year, containing an estimated $91 billion in recoverable metal value. Less than a quarter of that e-waste was properly recycled. Of the precious metals specifically, only about 22% were recovered — the rest ended up in landfills, was burned informally, or was processed through unregulated channels that waste the material and release toxic byproducts in the process.

The Bottom Line

Every phone, laptop, or old server sitting unused isn't just clutter — it's a small deposit of a resource that's measurably harder to find in nature than it is in your junk drawer. Mining new gold means destroying land, using enormous amounts of water and energy, and processing tons of rock for a tiny yield.
