E-Waste Education & Collection Campaign

A Partnership with Idaho National Laboratory

Research with a Purpose

This 3-year project is funded by the Vehicle Technologies Office within the Department of Energy and is a partnership between Sunnking Sustainable Solutions, Idaho National Laboratory (INL), and E Cyclers of Idaho.

Project Goals

• Raise awareness of e-waste recycling, especially battery-containing devices, using Sunnking’s proven collection-event model.

• Improve residential e-waste collection by replicating these events in Idaho, providing convenient recycling access in states without New York–level requirements.

A Partnership in E-Recycling for a Stronger America

Project Overview

Sunnking and INL are working together to improve the future of electronics recycling collection. By sharing our e-waste recycling event model with INL, we're changing the future of responsible recycling across the United States.

Proven Collection Model Meets New Terrain

For years, Sunnking has held free drive-thru electronics recycling events in New York. These events follow state e-waste disposal rules.

INL Is now using our complete approach to model and host similar events in Idaho. This includes logistics, outreach, and incentives.

Many states, including Idaho, classify electronic waste as regular waste. This means residents can throw away most of their e-waste with their regular trash. More strict rules apply to e-waste labeled as universal waste.

Research Focus: Viability in Nonregulated States

Our core recycling research goal is to determine whether the convenience and incentives that drive high participation in regulated states will work in states with less strict laws.

INL is tracking key factors while using Sunnking’s event model in Idaho. They measure event turnout, the amount of electronics collected, and the number of completed surveys.

The surveys produce data that helps INL assess how the model works outside New York. Insights will inform best practices for expanding collection events nationwide, especially in areas lacking legal frameworks.

Each event captures:
‍    · Participation Rate: Number of vehicles, no-show rate, and non-registered attendance
‍    · Material Volume: Total weight (lbs) of electronics and batteries collected
‍    · Demographic Reach: Zip-codes, travel times, gender, and other non-identifiable information

We aim to bring access to easy recycling options to residents across the country.

Benefits for Stakeholders and the Environment

By validating our turnkey collection model outside regulatory mandates, we’ll equip lawymakers, industry partners, and community organizers with evidence-based guidelines.

Sunnking and INL will publish a detailed handbook about how to run an event. This guide will include best practices to help speed up safe and easy e-waste recycling events across the country. This research will provide evidence that will guide state policymakers considering e-waste legislation.

Community Engagement: By creating best practices that encourage responsible electronics recycling among residents and businesses, we can reduce landfill-bound e-waste.
Environmental Impact: More recycling means a reduction in the amount of toxic materials we put into our ecosystem.
Economic Benefits: Reuse prevents natural resources from entering the waste stream. This benefits the supply stream by keeping materials in the circular economy.

E-Waste Education

🔌

What is e-waste?

If it has a plug or a battery, it counts.

E-waste explained

E-waste refers to any discarded electronic device with a power cord or battery. Phones, laptops, TVs, appliances, and more all qualify.

These devices should never go in the trash.

🔒

Data security

Recycling without destruction is a risk.

Why data matters

Many electronics store personal or business data long after they stop working.

Sunnking provides certified data wiping and physical destruction to ensure information never leaves your control.
