Lithium-ion batteries are in more devices than ever — phones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes — and they're one of the biggest safety challenges the recycling industry faces today. When damaged, punctured, or improperly handled, these batteries can enter thermal runaway and ignite, and fires caused this way have become a leading cause of incidents at recycling and waste facilities nationwide.
At Sunnking, battery-containing devices are identified and separated early in the process, handled according to strict protocols, and never processed alongside general material streams where damage risk is higher. Staff are trained specifically on battery hazards — how to recognize a damaged or swelling battery, how to isolate it safely, and how to store it until it can be properly processed.
Electronics contain more than just recyclable metals and plastics. CRT glass contains lead. Certain components contain mercury. Circuit boards and other parts can carry hazardous residues if processed incorrectly. Managing these materials safely — for our employees and for the environment — requires documented handling procedures at every stage, from intake to final processing.
That means clear protocols for identifying hazardous components, dedicated handling and storage procedures that keep them separate from general material flow, and processing methods that meet environmental compliance standards rather than shortcuts that create risk down the line.
Given how much of our industry's risk now centers on battery-related fires, fire prevention isn't an afterthought — it's a core part of facility design and daily operations. That includes proper storage practices that limit the risk of an isolated incident becoming a larger one, staff trained to recognize early warning signs, and clear response protocols if an issue does arise.
Prevention is always the priority. Most fire risks in this industry are the result of materials being mishandled somewhere upstream — which is exactly why training and process discipline matter as much as the equipment itself.
Beyond the higher-profile risks like batteries and hazardous materials, day-to-day safety comes down to the basics done consistently: proper personal protective equipment for every role, from steel toed shoes to eye protection to respiratory protection where needed, along with ongoing training on safe equipment operation and material handling.
Safety culture isn't built from a single policy — it's built from consistent habits, reinforced training, and a workplace where raising a safety concern is always encouraged.
Sunnking is proud to participate in the Recycled Materials Association's (ReMA) annual Safety Stand Down Week, an industry-wide initiative that encourages recycling companies across the country to pause regular operations and focus entirely on safety training and awareness. It's a reminder that safety in this industry isn't something any single company solves alone — it's a standard the entire recycling community has to hold together, especially as risks like battery fires continue to grow.
That same commitment is reflected in our R2v3 certification, which requires documented, independently audited processes for hazardous materials handling, worker health and safety, and environmental compliance. We've held this certification since becoming New York State's first R2-certified recycler, and we've maintained it because it holds us accountable to standards we don't get to define for ourselves.
