Sunnking recently had the privilege of visiting the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central New York (RMHCNY) in Syracuse, where we were welcomed by Zoe White, their Community Engagement Coordinator. From the moment we stepped inside, it was clear that this House is more than just a building. They've created a haven for families in difficult moments. Every detail, from the décor to the demeanor of the staff, radiates warmth and care.

A Home Away from Home

The House is designed to be as comfortable and functional as possible for families with children receiving medical care nearby. Located just minutes from the hospital, it’s a place where families can focus on what matters most without worrying about where they’ll sleep or eat.

Here are just some of the thoughtful features we saw:

  • Two fully equipped kitchens—one is completely handicap accessible.
  • A Grab-n-Go pantry stocked with quick meals and snacks.
  • A peaceful Quiet Room where technology is off-limits, offering a calming space to breathe and reset.
  • Playrooms for kids and a separate area just for teens.
  • Apartment-style suites on the top floor for longer stays.
  • Laundry facilities with small but meaningful touches—like laundry pods ready to use.
  • A Gift Room filled with toys and treats for birthdays, Christmas, and even adult guests.
  • Outdoor space for fresh air and movement.
  • Artwork and design choices that bring comfort and positivity to every hallway.
  • The little extras—automatic lights, friendly dog visits, and other details that make life just a little easier.

They’ve never had a night where there weren’t enough rooms, ensuring every family has a safe place to stay.

The Mission Behind the Magic

RMHCNY exists to keep families close to their hospitalized children, providing a place of comfort, care, and community when it’s needed most. Whether a family is there for a few days or several months, the House offers the support they need to navigate one of life’s most challenging experiences.

It’s not just about providing a roof—it’s about creating a home filled with love, understanding, and the resources to make each day a little brighter.

How You Can Help

Keeping the House running takes a village, and there are many ways to be part of their mission:

  • Volunteer you time: Help with meals, activities, or upkeep.
  • Make a donation: Financial contributions and wish list items are always needed.
  • Spread the word: Share their mission with friends, family, and coworkers.

Every effort, big or small, makes a difference for the families who walk through their doors.

If you'd like to learn more about RMHCNY, come ask them in person! They'll be at our upcoming Warehouse Bin-anza Sale.

Our tour of the Ronald McDonald House was more than just an introduction.

We got a reminder of the power of compassion, community, and the comfort of a warm, welcoming space. We left inspired, and we hope you will be too.
